Abstract:
A detailed gradiometer survey was conducted over land off Rooksdown Lane, Basingstoke. The project was commissioned by URS Infrastructure and Environment UK Limited, on behalf of their client Hampshire County Council, with the aim of establishing the presence, or otherwise, and nature of detectable archaeological features on the site ahead of a proposed development. The site comprises arable fields to the northwest of Basingstoke and approximately 1.8km east of Wootton Saint Lawrence. The site occupies land on the summit of a gently sloping hill. The geophysical survey was undertaken between 8th and 12th May 2014, and covered 4.9ha. The survey has demonstrated the presence of anomalies of likely, probable and possible archaeological interest within the survey area, along with regions of increased magnetic response, many plough lines and signs of previous settlement. Two complexes of enclosures have been detected that closely mirrors the results of the aerial photography carried out with the addition of detecting smaller features not previously seen. There is a large modern service cutting through the eastern of the two enclosures, with associated magnetic disturbance that is likely to have obscured other archaeological features.
