Abstract:
Archaeological monitoring undertaken in advance of works to move pews and constructed new vestry screen. The works involved the removal of some of the raised wooden pew bases and replacement with a new flagstone floor. The Diocesan Archaeological Advisor recommended that the works should be monitored/assessed following removal of the pew base before the works began. An area 2.7m by 2.8m in the western end of the nave was examined following the removal of the pew base. This revealed a shallow void (150mm deep) beneath. The upper deposits consisted of accumulated dust and limestone debris. The limestone consisted of small irregular fragments. Some larger, irregular fragments had been place in a north-south alighnment to support the pew base above. Plain, greenish window glass and a fragment of lead window came. The layer appears to represent building debris, probably formed during the mid 19th restoration of the church. It was concluded that the proposed works would not impact on the underlying archaeological deposits as the new floor would be built up in the existing void and no further archaeological monitoring was required during the works.
