Abstract:
An archaeological excavation was undertaken by Canterbury Archaeological Trust (CAT) in two phases between 19 July and 6 September 2017(Site 1) and 15 to 19 January 2018 (Sites 2 and 3) on land at Connaught Barracks, Dover. The earliest remains were encountered on Site 1, being formed by pipes associated with drainage at Fort Burgoyne that were potentially laid down in 1909. These were sealed by a levelling deposit of probable late First World War or early post-First World war date that may be associated with the formation of the recreation ground. The open land forming the recreation ground would seem to have been used for training purposes, probably during the late 1930s or Second World War. The training activity is represented by an over-engineered trench system and re-cut that bisected the site. This trenching does not fit in with known defensive works suggesting that it was almost certainly cut for training purposes. Such a view is further supported by the presence of a re-cut through part of the system that was presumably cut when it was still an obvious landscape feature. The smaller trench that lay to the north, perhaps represents a 'cut and cover' feature. Terracing and a road that probably pre-dated the 1940s, and various phases of landscaping were identified in Site 2. Features identified during the evaluation, and thought to potentially relate to the siege of Dover Castle were actually of modern date, relating to later landscaping. In Site 3, the concrete stanchion was fully exposed. While it is impossible to provide a definitive answer as to its function, the suggestion that it formed the tether for a barrage balloon cannot be ruled out.
