Abstract:
In July 2016 Cotswold Archaeology carried out a programme of Historic Building Recording on two Second World War Type 24 pillboxes (Pillbox HER 24237 and Pillbox HER 24208). Pillbox HER 24237 and Pillbox HER 24208 are positioned approximately 400ft (124m) apart and can be found immediately to the north of the A287 at the junction of Redfield's Lane. They are located approximately 600ft (200m) west of Dares Farm in the area of the proposed roundabout junction improvements. The monuments follow the course of the former Second World War Stop Line Defence at GHQ Line A which ran between Ewshot and Crondall on the heavily defended ridge at Ridding's Copse to the south of the Queen Elizabeth Barracks at Church Crookham. Two Vickers machine gun emplacements (HER 56570 and HER 24316) are located to the north of the Site. During building recording, access was available into the interior of Pillbox HER 24208 but due to health and safety concerns associated with Pillbox HER 24237 the interior of this monument was not recorded. Both pillboxes were built of brick and concrete to a hexagonal design (shape in plan) with each monument comprising a single rear entrance and each wall held an embrasure (loophole) from which small arms could be fired out from in the event of an attack. An anti-ricochet internal wall was centrally placed within the infantry chamber of each and visible from the rear entrance. These constructional characteristics are typical of the Type 24 pillbox design. Pillbox HER 24237 and Pillbox HER 24208 are generally well-preserved and are important not only as a point of interest but also to illustrate significant aspects of British military homeland defence, especially during the Battle of Britain in 1940.
