Abstract:
In February of 2019 NPS Archaeology carried out archaeological trial trenching in advance of a proposed residential development at Queens House, Woodbridge, Suffolk. The trial trenching was in response to a brief issued by Suffolk County Council Archaeological Service. The fieldwork and reporting was funded by Rose Builders Ltd. The programme of work entailed the excavation of eight trenches in two areas. Two trenches were excavated in Area A, west of Queens House. Six trenches were excavated in Area B, south of Queens House. Six of the trenches were 10.00m long, one trench in Area A was 20.00m in length and one in Area B was 15.00m. All trenches were 1.80m wide. The only potential archaeological features recorded by the evaluation were present in Trenches 1 and 4, the remainder of the trenches being devoid of any features of archaeological interest. Both features were considered most likely to be natural in origin: purposely uprooted trees containing no finds. Both features appeared aligned to other trees, supporting the idea these were natural features and not archaeological. Trenches 5 - 8 were heavily disturbed by levelling the area to construct a surface car park on a steep slope, with Trench 5 being excavated to a maximum safe working depth of 1.2m without reaching natural geology. Despite evidence for possible Roman settlement and an Anglo-Saxon cemetery in the school grounds, the evaluation provided little evidence of human activity of any period.
