Abstract: |
This post-excavation assessment report presents the results of an archaeological evaluation, excavation and watching brief undertaken at the site of the new Aldi food store, Friary Place, Strood, Kent. The archaeological works were commissioned by Aldi Stores Ltd in advance of development: the initial evaluation was undertaken between November 2007 and January 2008; and the excavation and watching brief between April and May 2012. The archaeological investigations identified seven periods of archaeological activity from the Late Bronze Age to the 19th century. The most significant findings were evidence of Roman salt-working; Roman and medieval palaeochannels(s); the remains of the medieval hospital of St Mary's; and 17th century and later post-medieval buildings. |
