Abstract:
A heritage assessment was carried out for North Lincolnshire Council in order to assess the archaeological potential and impact of development of land off Phoenix Parkway, Scunthorpe, North Lincolnshire. This assessment comprised desk-based research and a geophysical survey by magnetometry of the proposed development area. For the desk-based research, data was gathered from a range of primary and secondary sources including a search of the North Lincolnshire Historic Environment Record, historic maps and online resources. There are no designated heritage assets within the search area and the site is not within a Conservation Area. There is significant evidence recorded for prehistoric activity in the search area, with scattered artefacts and cropmark features, including some flint finds from near the site. Archaeological work to the east of the site identified a possible Bronze Age flat cemetery in the vicinity as well as Iron Age ditches and later linear features. The potential to encounter activity of this date in the study area is considered to be moderate as it is likely that further isolated flint finds may be found, together with associated features. The archaeological potential for all other periods is negligible as the site is likely to have been either agricultural land or woodland since at least the medieval period. A geophysical survey by magnetometry was undertaken over the footprint of the development area, and identified parallel, linear features which may reflect the line of a former track along the parish boundary, together with some, possibly modern, linear features such as drains.
