Abstract: |
A survey of the west range and part of the central range of outbuildings at Mill Farm was undertaken in September 2011. The earliest element of the complex consists of the granary in the north range which is probably late 18th century/early 19th century in date and was not part of the current survey. Additional buildings were added on at least three separate occasions to create an E-shaped layout with two crewyard areas. Cartographic evidence has provided supporting evidence for the sequence of construction for the various phases. The main layout of West, north and east ranges was completed before 1887 and the central range by 1907. It is possible that the west range was part of a series of improvements undertaken in Appleby by the Winn family who were the major landowners. They were responsible for the construction of the estate cottages which are a distinctive feature of Appleby village located north of Mill Farm. |
