Abstract:
A watching brief was undertaken by Pre-Construct Archaeology Ltd. during development at Humberside International Airport, Kirmington, North Lincolnshire. Susana Parker of Waterman Energy, Environment and Design Ltd. appointed Pre-Construct Archaeology Ltd. to undertake the work. The watching brief, which was supplementary to an earlier evaluation on the site, identified significant evidence of Romano-British activity on the site to the south of the known, but poorly understood, Roman settlement at Kirmington. Evidence from the watching brief included a 1st - 2nd century triple ditch arrangement possibly forming an enclosure, but predominantly evidence of Late Roman (4th - 5th century) activity in the form of ditches, pits, gullies postholes and a possible well in addition to postholes for a possible 4th century building. A substantial assemblage of pottery and mortaria was recovered from the features but scant evidence of other diagnostic material remains, indicative, perhaps, of outlying settlement activity and, possibly, local pottery manufacture
