Abstract: |
An archaeological fieldwalking survey was carried out on Land adjacent to Manton Quarry, North Lincolnshire in order to inform a planning application for proposed mineral extraction. An extensive programme of fieldwalking was carried out in the fields to the south-east of Manton village in 1999 and 2000, and substantial evidence for prehistoric and Romano-British occupation, as well as Anglo-Saxon and medieval activity, has been found in fields around the currently proposed mineral extraction site. The fieldwalking retrieved a total of thirty-three individual finds, including nineteen fragments of ceramic building material, five fragments of industrial slag waste, sixteen abraded pottery sherds and a single flint. The findings of the survey indicate an ephemeral spread of occupational debris of early prehistoric, Roman, medieval and later date. Much of the material encountered was abraded and therefore may not indicate the presence of any significant in situ archaeological remains at this location. |
