Abstract:
An archaeological field evaluation was undertaken on 18th January 2011 by Archaeological Research Services Ltd in the car park to the rear of the former Shoulder of Mutton Public House (NGR SK 2441 1535). The objective of the evaluation was to identify the putative remains of a medieval Chapel, described as being owned by Lullington Church and identified on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map as a Free Chapel (Site of). The site of proposed new cottages is located close to the potential location of the chapel. The Development Control Archaeologist indicated that the potential for archaeological remains was considered to be high and a programme of archaeological work was therefore, attached to the planning consent. A total of five evaluation trenches, covering some 40m², were excavated, two of which, measuring 1mx5m were located across the projected line of the walls of the chapel as shown on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map. The remaining three trenches measuring 1mx10m were located within the main area of the car park in order to evaluate the potential for human burials which may exist in the immediate area of the chapel. All the trenches were machine excavated under archaeological supervision according to the methodology. During the programme of evaluation trenching, no features suggestive of wall foundations, floor surfaces or human burials were discovered, suggesting that either the remains of the chapel were removed or the location of the chapel on the First Edition Ordnance Survey map was incorrect. A ditch discovered in one of the trenches was probably an ephemeral gully of unknown origin. The car park was observed to be lower than the adjacent Shoulder of Mutton public house suggesting that the whole area may have been truncated in the past, probably explaining the lack of features or artefacts.
