Abstract:
Archaeological desk-based assessment at Land between Lower Road and Bibberne Row, Stalbridge, Dorset. Avon Archaeology Limited was commissioned by Grass Roots Planning Ltd to undertake an archaeological desk-based assessment of land between Lower Road and Bibberne Row, Stalbridge, Dorset as part of an upcoming planning application for residential development of the area, anticipated to entail 150 residential units along with a small employment/office hub. The site is an irregular triangle in plan and contains a total of around 5.5 hectares. It is currently undeveloped arable farmland. Research found that the study site may lie close to the nucleus of early Stalbridge, probably centred to south of the modern town, on either Bibberne Brook or the Stour River. However, farming has probably disturbed any remains. However, within 800m north of the site, two field names were identified as probably reflecting prehistoric activity: Barrow Hill and The Ring. Barrow Hill is identified as beorhleage in an AD933 boundary charter, and also fell on the 18th century boundary between the (Stalbridge) Weston and Stalbridge tithings. The Ring appears in documents dating to 1731 onwards. Although The Ring has long been developed, aerial photographs may show a raised mound on one of the Barrow Hill fields. Neither are currently identified on the HER.
