Abstract:
Headland Archaeology (UK) Ltd undertook a programme of archaeological watching brief, evaluation and excavation at the site of the former Baptist chapel and burial ground, located at the corner of Sandwell Road and Mill Street, West Bromwich. This was part of a phased programme of archaeological fieldwork in connection with planning permission (ref DC/O8/50124). Phase 1 involved the excavation and removal of contaminated material from the site under archaeological supervision, Phase 2 involved the removal of overburden from the burial ground followed by evaluation of the burial ground, Phase 3 involved the excavation of the remains of the chapel building and Phase 4 was the excavation of the burial ground. An exhumation licence was granted from the Ministry of Justice in line with the Burial Act of 1857 for this work. The remains of 150 individuals were excavated from the burial ground; 40 individuals were sufficiently well preserved for further analysis off-site by an osteologist. A range of coffin types and furniture were also identified, including devices intended to protect burials from grave robbers.
