Abstract: |
As part of the proposed redevelopment 1-3 Congreve Street and 6-11 Townsend Street, London, SE17 an archaeological field evaluation was carried out on a series of evaluation trenches within the existing buildings. The site revealed evidence relating to the Roman and Post-Medieval periods. A ditch dating to 1st/2nd century was recorded in the southeast of the site and pottery dating to the Roman period was recovered from subsoil deposits in two of the trenches excavated. The Post-Medieval features recorded on the site included agricultural/horticultural soils, a possible ditch dating to the 17th century, and features and levelling layers associated with housing on the site dating from 18th century onwards. |
