Abstract:
Archaeology South-East (ASE) has been commissioned by CgMs Consulting to undertake an archaeological watching brief at the Proposed Service Area, land south-east of Martins Farm, London Road, Ashington, West Sussex (centred on NGR 513438 16604). The natural Weald Clay geology was observed in all areas monitored at a maximum depth of 0.40m BGL. Two flint flakes collected from subsoil at the site suggest passing early Neolithic activity. Six pot sherds from two different early Glazed Red Earthenware jars were retrieved from the subsoil, which date to between the later 16th and mid-18th centuries. Three ditches were identified. One contained a pot sherd of early Glazed Red Earthenware, therefore this feature may be associated with a known c.18th farmstead, previously excavated and recorded c.250m south-east of the site. Of the other two ditches, one is parallel and is therefore considered to be of the same date, and the other is undated.
