Abstract:
Archaeology South-East carried out a programme of archaeological investigations at Borough Green Sandpit, Kent. The work revealed remains dating from the prehistoric, Roman and post-medieval periods. Prehistoric remains comprised flintwork perhaps dating from the palaeolithic to the Bronze Age and two LBA - Iron Age pits. The majority of the features on the site dated to the Late Iron Age/early Roman period, perhaps c. AD10-70, and probably represented a small Late Iron Age/early Roman farmstead and associated small scale stone quarrying. No further activity was identified on the site until the post-medieval period, when two phases of clay extraction were recorded. The earlier phase dated to the 18th to early 19thcentury and was represented by at least twenty shallow pits and six gullies that perhaps demarked unexploited extraction areas. The later phase perhaps dated to the 19th to early 20thcentury.
