Abstract:
Previous geophysical survey of the site detected a range of anomalies of possible or probable archaeological origin. Subsequent trial-trench evaluation, in April 2018, established the presence of a possible Mesolithic or Neolithic pit, several Bronze Age to Early Iron Age monuments and an extensive Roman enclosure and trackway. A second phase of evaluation, comprising the investigation of three additional trenches, targeted the remains of the possible Early/Middle Iron Age square enclosure. This phase of evaluation provided a better understanding of the form and dimensions of the enclosure ditch, as well as its stratigraphic relationship with a Late Roman ditch. No additional secure dating evidence and no clear indication of the function of the square enclosure, however, was identified. Three small pits/postholes were encountered near the centre of the enclosure, though two were undated and the third was of Late Roman date. A large pit/hollow outside the square enclosure was also of Late Roman date.
