Abstract:
This small watching brief was undertaken at St Mary Magdalene churchyard in order to ensure human remains were not disturbed by the excavation of a new service trench. Though in the event o human remains were recovered or disturbed in this work, a small sequence was nonetheless revealed including features relating to water management in the form of two probable 18th-century brick drains predating the churchyard. This was complemented by later evidence of quarrying of the Brickearth natural at the margins of the area to the west, potentially in connection with its initial laying out, which then subsequent was used for the deposition of domestic refuse. Additionally, evidence for the pre-garden layout and the functioning churchyard during its usage for burial was found in the presence of a York Stone kerb which corresponds with roadways leading to the former mortuary and coroner's court on the 1873 OS map, prior to the sites redesign in the 1890s.
