Abstract: |
Archaeological monitoring for a replacement soakaway in the garden of Front Lodge, Knighthayes in Tiverton parish, Mid Devon. Front Lodge is located on a gentle south-west facing slope, perched up above the valley of the River Exe but below the hills above. The lodge was built c.1872 to serve the new house at Knightshayes, and during landscaping works a lead casket containing a probable cremation burial dating to the Roman period was uncovered. 150m to the south of the lodge is the Bolham Roman fort occupied AD65-AD85×90, and on that basis it is possible other burials may be present. The proposed works will be subject to archaeological monitoring in case further burials are present. |
