Abstract:
Cornwall Archaeological Unit (CAU) was commissioned by the National Trust to undertake a historic building survey of the house and stable block at Arlington Court near Barnstaple, Devon located at NGR: SS 61094 40522. The work was commissioned in order to provide a better understanding of the buildings and to help inform future management and conservation. Arlington Court is the former residence of the Chichester family which was bequeathed to the National Trust in 1949 on the death of Miss Rosalie Chichester. The present house is a Grade II* Listed Building. It was first constructed in c1820 at a distance from the site of the earlier house which was demolished at that time. It consists of a main block built in c1820 with various phases of extensions to the north added throughout the 19th century. The main family rooms in the house are situated to look south over gardens and parkland (also listed Grade II*). The stable block is a Grade II Listed building which was first constructed in 1791 close to the site of the old house. It was majorly remodelled in 1864 when an arcaded front was added. A total of eight construction phases for the house and four construction phases for the stable block have been identified as a result of the recording work.
