Abstract:
The aim of the geoarchaeological investigations at the Leven Wharf site was to (1) clarify the nature of the sub-surface stratigraphy, in particular the presence and thickness of Alluvium and Peat across the site, and (2) to evaluate the potential of the sedimentary sequences for reconstructing the environmental history of the site and its environs. In order to achieve this aim, a programme of geoarchaeological fieldwork and deposit modelling was carried out, incorporating logs from previous geotechnical boreholes and records from two new geoarchaeological boreholes. The results of the investigations have contributed to our understanding of the Holocene stratigraphic sequence in this area of the Lea Valley. Overlying the London Clay bedrock at the site is a sequence of Late Devensian Lea Valley Gravel, Holocene alluvial deposits (in one borehole containing a thin (0.02m) Peat horizon) and Made Ground. On the basis of the unknown age of the Peat and its limited thickness, a limited programme of environmental archaeological assessment of borehole Leven-QBH1 was recommended.
