Abstract:
A programme of geoarchaeological investigations was undertaken at The Clipper site in order to (1) clarify the nature of the sub-surface stratigraphy across the site; (2) clarify the nature, depth, extent and possible date of any alluvium and peat deposits; and (3) make recommendations for any further environmental archaeological assessment of the sequence. The results of the geoarchaeological deposit modelling have revealed a sequence of Late Devensian Shepperton Gravel, the surface of which was recorded at -3.14m OD, overlain by sandy (the Lower Alluvium) and clayey (the Upper Alluvium) Holocene alluvium, capped by modern Made Ground. No organic units or peat were recorded in the sequence at site. The Gravel at The Clipper is relatively low, comparable to the lower Gravel topography that underlies parts of Southwark, the Isle of Dogs and Greenwich Peninsula. Given the inorganic and generally coarse-grained nature of the alluvial sequence at the site, no further environmental archaeological assessment of borehole QBH1 is recommended. In addition, on the basis of the relatively low Gravel topography at the site, the archaeological potential of the Gravel surface is considered to be low, since it would most likely have been regularly inundated on the floodplain for much of the prehistoric period.
