Abstract:
MOLA Northampton, commissioned by The Environment Partnership (TEP), carried out an archaeological trial trench evaluation on land at Clear Farm to inform a planning application. Eleven trenches were excavated and recorded archaeological remains comprising ditches, pits and a posthole ranging from the late Iron Age and Roman periods, as well as Late Saxon, medieval and modern periods. It is likely that the features represent a continuation of Iron Age and Roman fields and enclosures seen elsewhere around Bassingbourn, such as during excavations to the west at Bassingbourn College. There was a small area of Late Saxon occupation in the eastern end of the proposed development area. The north-eastern part of the site was boggy and the trenches identified a possible palaeo-channel in this area. The northern part of the proposed development area has been contaminated in recent years by the disposal of asbestos.
