Abstract: |
A geoarchaeological deposit modelling exercise, incorporating four new geoarchaeological boreholes and existing geotechnical data, was instigated to: (1) clarify the nature of the sub-surface stratigraphy, in particular the presence and thickness of alluvium and peat across the site, and (2) to evaluate the potential of the sedimentary sequences for reconstructing the environmental history of the site and its environs. The results reveal that overlying the London Clay bedrock at the site is a sequence of Late Devensian Shepperton Gravel, Holocene alluvial deposits and variable thicknesses of Made Ground. Highly variable Gravel surfaces and alluvial sequences, in places including peat horizons, have been recorded at the site. These results contradict those of MoLA (1996, 1997), who on the basis of the available records (few of which were present in the area of the site) interpreted their Landscape Zone LZ2 as one of limited palaeoenvironmental potential. Although the organic horizons recorded at the site are both localised and relatively thin, both within the alluvium and gravel, such deposits represent potential areas that might have been utilised or even occupied by prehistoric and historic people, evidence of which may be preserved in the archaeological record (e.g. features and structures). In addition, the archaeological potential of the peat, and this area in general, is highlighted by the presence of a possible Early Neolithic trackway and associated structures at Belmarsh West, ca. 500m to the south of the present site (Hart et al., 2009). In addition, the presence of peat horizons within Late Devensian gravel is rare in the Lower Thames Valley; the age and character of the peat recorded within the gravel at the present site is therefore of interest. A programme of environmental archaeological assessment of borehole TMR-QBH3 was therefore recommended. |
