Abstract: |
Wessex Archaeology were commissioned by Enterprise Managed Services Ltd to undertake an geophysical survey and archaeological watching brief during all groundworks associated with the renewal of a water pipeline which partially traverses Navio Roman Fort, Hope, Derbyshire. Navio Roman Fort is a Scheduled Ancient Monument (No. 1017505). The Scheme was centred on NGR 418175 382705. During the renewal of an existing water pipe, the area at the north-east limit of the Scheduled Monument of Navio Roman Fort was subject to three small interventions: trenches 9, 11 and 13. Four archaeological features were observed in trench 13. A large ditch (1323), likely part of the fort's defences, was partially excavated, although the full width, depth and stratigraphic sequence of the ditch were not determined. Seven or eight layers of fill were seen within ditch 1323, which produced finds that were either generally Romano-British in date, or in the case of large fragments of Nene Valley mortaria from fill 1320, date from the second to fourth centuries AD. Ditch 1323 was sealed by large sandstone blocks from a collapsed wall (1312) which presumably also formed part of the fort's defences. Fragments of the concrete-like material opus signinum were recovered from collapsed wall 1312, suggesting that it had been used in the construction of the fort, perhaps as a floor or in another capacity. An undated posthole (1318) was situated early in the stratigraphic sequence, and may relate to early defences at Navio. Colluvium sealed posthole 1309, which was in turn cut by a possible terrace (1315). Possible terrace 1315 may have provided access across steep ground between the fort and the river. Five or six further layers of colluvium were present above the possible terrace, the upper layer of which also sealed collapsed wall 1312. The colluvial layers contained pottery, CBM and other finds, which are presumably derived from Navio fort situated immediately uphill. |
