Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Ørsted to undertake a preliminary assessment of three timbers recovered during the clearance of obstructions within proposed cable routes for Race Bank Offshore Wind Farm. Assessment confirmed them as hull timbers, which do not relate to the same vessel. C14 dating analyses indicated that one of the timbers is likely to be of 17th century date. Due to the rarity of ships of this period, this timber is of high archaeological significance. C14 analyses on another timber showed that the timber was likely felled no earlier than 1800-50, this timber is therefore of low archaeological significance. The presence of a large scatter of linear anomalies, similar but apparently longer than those associated with the recently recovered timbers, might suggest the presence of further timbers in the vicinity. Although the nature of these anomalies is at present unclear, it is possible that these correspond to timbers that are part of a wreck that has been dispersed over a wide area In the event that coherent sections of wreck material were to be recovered a re-evaluation of the archaeological significance of the timbers would be required. The presence of further buried wreck material in the immediate proximity to where the timbers were recovered cannot be conclusively excluded as it could be covered by the shallow sandbanks. There is potential for 17th century wreck material and the discovery of coherent elements of such wreck would be of international relevance.
