Abstract:
The results of archaeological monitoring and recording carried out by South West Archaeology Ltd. at Buckland Abbey, Buckland Monachorum, West Devon, Devon during the partial reconstruction of a garden wall within the Scheduled Ancient Monument (SAM). Buckland Abbey was founded in the late 13th century and after the Dissolution passed through private ownerships that resulted in various phases of remodelling and rebuilding of parts of the extensive building complexes on the site. Earlier archaeological works on the site have identified 14th and 15th century buildings and 16th century extensions (the Cider House, Tower House and a north wing to the abbey) that had been demolished through the 17th and 18th centuries to the west of the site. Parts of the garden wall were possibly built while the property was still a functioning abbey. At some point the ground was built-up on the north-east side of the garden wall and a structure with garderobes (potentially a lodging of some kind) was built with a stair case up from the lower part of the garden. According to an 18th century engraving and subsequent mapping of the site, the structure and staircase were probably demolished (along with the buildings identified to the west) prior to 1734. The presence of c.15th-17th century ceramics in the demolition material across this structure provide a probable date range akin to the Tower House and its associated (partially demolished) outbuilding, of between AD 1500 and c.1734. This includes the era of the Dissolution.
