Abstract: |
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by J-Power Systems Corporation to undertake archaeological assessment of geophysical survey data over sections of the NEMO Link route where possible archaeological material was identified either during diver survey or a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) survey, both activities associated with UXO clearance. 115580.01 - During the ROV survey of anomaly 4959, four pieces of metallic debris were tentatively identified as aircraft debris and reported to Wessex Archaeology. A 100m exclusion zone (TEZ) was established and it was agreed with Historic England and the MoD to recover the four items for identification. Of the four items only one small piece related to aircraft remains, believed to be a rib from a control surface of a large aircraft, the remainder being fishing gear. This is not believed to be related to the wreck site of an aircraft. 115580.02 - The ROV survey also identified a possible heavily concreted cannon (anomaly 6382) and other timber and metal debris (anomaly 6384). The items were recovered and the cannon, following deconcretion, was identified as a small calibre 3-pounder weapon with an in situ lead apron, wooden tampion within the muzzle and fragments of wood and organic fibres within the bore. The remaining debris appears to relate to a possible late 19th to early 20th century small merchant vessel, including a timber frame. These two anomalies appear unrelated and there is no evidence to suggest a wreck site exists. 115580.03 - Divers associated with the UXO clearance survey recovered a metal band that would have served to reinforce the hull of a timber vessel and did not relate to a wreck site or spread of significant debris. |
