Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by CEMEX UK Marine Limited, Hanson Aggregates Marine Limited, Lafarge Tarmac Limited and Volker Dredging Limited, coordinated through the British Marine Aggregate Producers Association, to produce an interpretive report detailing the methods and results of the operational sampling events undertaken in the East Coast aggregate extraction block, under the auspices of the provisional Written Scheme of Investigation for the short-term licences and English Heritage approved licence specific methodologies. The report summarises a series of operational sampling events carried out by the aggregate licence operators between May 2012 and December 2014. This comprised 21 operational sampling events in 9 out of 15 short-term licence areas. From c. 80,000 tonnes of aggregate, 14 lithics and numerous faunal remains were recovered. The results furthered the understanding of the region and allowed for the assessment of hypotheses. Levallois-type material was recovered from Areas 240 and 212, indicating a background level of hominin activity, broadly comparable in date to the previous discoveries from Area 240. The area of assessment was approximately 24 km x 30 km.
