Abstract: |
This document was prepared by Wessex Archaeology on behalf of London Gateway Port in the course of developing proposals for the publication of the results of investigations associated with the development of the port in the period 2001-2008. This document also forms a basis for discussions about the disposal (to a publicly accessible archive) and discard of material recovered in the course of these investigations, within the context of the overall project archive. Several phases of investigations were carried out in the period 2001-2008. The majority of this report is concerned with physical interventions (diving and salvage/recovery). Reference is also included to previous interventions that resulted in the recovery of material, where known. A detailed account of each of the sites referred to here, including the history of investigations, interpretation based on geophysical, diving and documentary research, background history and identification of importance, is set out in a series of Clearance Mitigation Statements (CMS) included as part of the ADS report deposition. Please see archive index spreadsheet for concordance. The majority of this document is concerned with an assessment of the artefacts from each site, which should be read in conjunction with the artefact catalogue set out in Appendix II (see associated file 72430_1 Artefact Assessment Nov 2009). For the purposes of this assessment, artefacts include structural timbers (recorded as contexts) and samples as well as small and large finds. Proposals for further recording, analysis or conservation are – where warranted – summarised by material type and site in Appendix III. |
