Abstract:
This report gives the results of archaeological excavation work carried out between March and October 2012 by Border Archaeology Ltd (BAL) on behalf of Bristol Water as part of the Mains Refurbishment Scheme of the Hutton to Banwell Water Main Pipeline. The excavation found archaeological remains of regional, if not national importance, extending from the Bronze Age to the end of the Romano-British period. Features and artefacts were interleaved with inundation episodes and included: Waterlogged Late Bronze Age levels with occupation remains including bronze working waste, coal, bone, wood and shale artefacts, wooden stakes marking a possible route through the marsh of both late Bronze Age and Early Iron Age periods, a substantial 1st to 2nd century AD enclosure, 1st century AD tool marks and a human footprint, ritual pottery burials of the 3rd to 4th century AD, Romano-British buildings, roads, cemetery and artefacts, evidence of Romano-British lead working, Romano-British ditches and boundary changes and a late 4th /early 5th century AD inundation episode.
