Abstract:
As part of the Heritage Lottery funded 'Nottingham Castle Redevelopment Project', Nottingham City Council was required to carry out archaeological mitigation works in advance of proposed alterations to drainage and an area of excavation within the disabled parking area in the Middle Bailey of Nottingham Castle (centred on SK 56856 39480). 17th Century demolition: The demolition of the Chapel was visible in the remains of demolition rubble and a demolition cut abutting the remains of the wall. A second cut was revealed in the far western end of the trench that could have related to the extending of the Middle Bailey grounds by removing curtain wall masonry or other earlier materials. Late 17th - Early 18th Century landscaping: A number of landscaping and levelling layers were deposited after the demolition of the chapel in the mid-17th century. One layer, a greyish dark brown silt sand was visible across the entire length of the trench and was found to contain a disturbed inhumation of a complete infant. The original date of the disturbed inhumation is uncertain, although a medieval date seems most likely. A radiocarbon date is forthcoming. 18th- 19th Century Landscaping: A large cut through the earlier landscaping material was visible across the eastern end of the Trench. The First Edition Ordnance Survey map of 1881 shows the excavation area was once close to/part of an area of formal planting, therefore the cut was interpreted as an artificial plant bed.
