Abstract:
On the 18th June 2018, Oxford Archaeology East conducted a programme of monitoring and recording at the site of All Saints Church, Elton, Cambridgeshire (centred TL 08871 93563, event number ECB5444) in advance of a proposed extension on the northern side of the church. A single trench following the footprint of the standing boiler house was excavated using a 6-ton mini-tracked digger fitted with a toothless bucket. The trench measured approximately 15m long x 1m and was orientated north to south and excavated to a depth ranging between 0.60m and 1m. The fill compositions observed during the investigation were entirely of later homogenised made-ground deposits comprising of brick and ceramic pipe. No archaeologically significant deposits were encountered. Any archaeological horizons would have been destroyed by the extensive disturbance dating to the 19th century that is highly likely to be related to the construction of the boiler house.
