Abstract:
Between 22nd June and 8th August 2019, Oxford Archaeology East undertook an excavation on a small (0.13ha) plot of land within the historic core of the village of Waterbeach, Cambridgeshire (TL 4977 6522). The excavation was preceded by trial trenching which had demonstrated the presence of features relating to Late Saxon and medieval activity. The earliest features uncovered during excavation were a Romano-British boundary ditch and part of an undated, but likely pre-medieval, trackway. A sequence of ditched enclosures was uncovered across the area, with the densest activity concentrated in the east of the site. Established in the late 9th to mid-10th century, the enclosure system was subsequently reworked throughout the medieval period, eventually being divided into plots. Other features uncovered include possible structural remains, pits, a well/watering hole and a kiln feature. During the post-medieval period a large ditch, possibly a storm drain, was constructed in the southern half of the site.
