Abstract:
Albion Archaeology undertook the first of several open-area excavations within the Houghton Regis North 1 development area. The site was, adjacent to a previous excavation undertaken at Woodside. The work uncovered a possible middle Bronze Age boundary ditch, which was modified to form a trackway in the late Iron Age/Roman period. Next to the trackway were a cremation cemetery and two crop-processing areas. Evidence for post-Roman activity comprised one Anglo-Saxon building and medieval furrows. The boundary comprised two ditches. A number of small pits and postholes were also dug and some produced late Bronze Age/early Iron Age pottery. During the late Iron Age a trackway was established. A cremation cemetery with fourteen burials was located on the east side of the trackway. The trackway remained in use into the Roman period. Two crop-processing areas were identified on its eastern side. The crop-processing areas each contained a single drying oven. Although the excavation produced 3.6kg of Roman pottery, no definitive evidence of domestic activity was identified; the nearest known settlement is located c.100m to the south. A single inhumation with no grave-goods was found in the vicinity of the trackway. In saxon period, a single sunken-featured building was uncovered
