Abstract:
Allen Archaeology Limited was commissioned by Lincs Design Consultancy to undertake archaeological monitoring and recording on land at Greenacres, Washdyke lane, Mumby, Alford, Lincolnshire during the groundworks for the construction of a house, detached double garage and a store, including access for vehicles. The site lies within an area of archaeological potential, a mesolithic flint scatter was recorded in the nearby village of Cumberworth, and Iron Age and Roman finds have also been located in the near vicinity. Mumby is mentioned three times in the Domesday Book suggesting it then had a sizeable population. Two moated sites, a manor house, grange and a village church dating to the 13th century indicate that the site has had constant occupation since then. The presence of post-medieval buildings including two chapels, a smithy and a windmill supports this. In Mumby there are also two WWII pill boxes which formed a part of the country's coastal defences. The monitored area consisted of 0.45m wide footings for the development, in two areas measuring 10.7m wide by 15.8 long and 5.3m wide by 8.7m long, and excavated to a maximum depth of 1.15m. The monitoring exposed a sequence of topsoil, subsoil and natural geology across the site. One archaeological feature was uncovered, an east to west aligned ditch containing modern building rubble. The results of the archaeological monitoring indicate the groundworks have had a negligible impact on the limited archaeological resource.
