Abstract:
This project is a community survey and excavation at Conisbrough Mill Piece, Conisbrough, South Yorkshire. The work was carried out as part of the Dearne Valley Landscape Partnership (DVLP), a HLF-funded 5-year programme of projects focussing on the historic buildings and landscapes of the Dearne Valley. By working with local communities, the Partnership aims to protect, preserve and enhance the area. As part of the DVLP, the Archaeology and Geology Project has been established, which will enable more of the historic environment of the Dearne Valley to be surveyed through the archaeological investigation of ten sites, of which Conisbrough Mill Piece is one. The project aims to enhance understanding of the heritage of the area as well as developing skills, knowledge and capacity within local communities. The site is likely to have been one of two mills recorded in Conisbrough in the 1086 Domesday survey and may have been the manorial mill for which tenants were obliged to pay for its use. Although the site is known to have housed mills probably since at least the 11th century, the precise location of the former mill buildings within the current site remains largely unknown. The work comprised a basic walkover survey with the volunteers from EnTour, to identify possible archaeological features within the site. Two areas deemed to show high archaeological potential were then chosen from the surveyed features, which formed the target areas for the excavation. Trench 1 revealed structural remains, possibly related to a shooting range thought to have existed on the site. The possibility of this was supported by the collection of over one hundred bullet casings within the trench. Trench 2 also contained structural remains, together with frequent pottery and glass of 19th and 20th century date.
