Abstract:
Four trial pits were excavated. One was in the basement of the extant Grade II Listed 17th-century building while three were inside the courtyard behind it. The site lies partially within a Scheduled Ancient Monument, the Cluniac priory and abbey of St Saviour Bermondsey. The pit in the basement revealed natural sand and gravel cut by a pit or ditch. This contained weathered fragments of Roman pottery and may be related to the agricultural use of the land during the Roman or early medieval period. The pit was sealed by medieval plough soil which was cut by the wall of the present building. A test pit on the north side of the courtyard near the listed building revealed a demolition layer of late 17th-century date which was overlain by made ground of probable 19th-century date. This was cut by the remains of a brick structure which, based on map evidence, was built against the south wall of the building around 1872-1887. This was cut by a north-west/south-east wall which may be shown on the 1894-96 Ordnance Survey map, and which was overlain by further 19th/20th century walls and a 20th-century drain. A test pit in the south-west corner of the courtyard revealed only concrete foundations with the construction cut backfilled with silty sand containing material including 19th-century building materials and pottery of 1630-1900. Another on the east side of the courtyard revealed extensive modern made ground and truncation. No remains relating to St Saviour Bermondsey were found.
