Abstract:
Excavation at Horseheath Road revealed that the earliest activity was a small group of four pits containing worked flint and Neolithic pottery. During the Middle to Late Bronze Age a round barrow was constructed at the site, formed by a ring ditch measuring 32m in diameter and containing a large assemblage of worked flint. A single inhumation burial of an adult female was recovered from the centre of the barrow alongside pig and dog bone. Next to the grave, a large post hole was interpreted as a possible grave marker, while a small group of three urned cremations was identified within the north-east part of the barrow and a single un-urned cremation was encountered to the south. Two ditches and a post-built fence line were also dated to this phase. Finds from the barrow ditch suggest that it was still visible in the Romano-British period, when the ditch was potentially backfilled. A trackway, identified to the west of the excavation area, possibly relates to this period. Within the southern part of the barrow the skeleton of a sub-adult in a supine position with two knife blades dated to the Anglo-Saxon period was uncovered. Post-medieval enclosure and boundary ditches were also present.
