Abstract:
A cultural heritage assessment was undertaken for a proposed Woodland Creation project on the Chipchase Estate, north of Gunnerton, Northumberland. In addition to site visits, the assessment involved consultations with the local planning authority, an examination of historic maps and documentary records, consultation of published local and regional histories, consideration of the results of previous investigations and synthesis of data from the Northumberland HER. The main assessment findings are that while later-prehistoric/Romano-British settlement sites, in particular, are well-attested in the vicinity, with evidence of earlier prehistoric funerary monuments also recorded, there is little specific evidence for such sites within the assessment area. Surviving remains, identified through a combination of aerial photography and LiDAR analysis and walkover survey, mostly comprise features associated with the management of this enclosed moorland in the 18th-19th centuries. These features - ridge and furrow and field boundary banks, are not in themselves of more than local archaeological significance. They do, however, precede the earliest OS mapping. Additionally, features of uncertain date and significance identified include a small circular feature, a cairn incorporating possible cup markings, and an L-shaped linear bank. The assessment also considers the potential impact of planting on the setting of monuments in the wider landscape. It was concluded that three scheduled monuments to the east will be visually impacted, however, this is only very marginal for SAM 20929 and is considered insignificant in the other cases, given greater proximity of a pre-existing plantation for 20927 and extension of the woodland edge from 20930. It was noted that woodland plantations form a traditional component of the overall landscape setting of this area. Recommendations call for mitigation by avoiding planting on cultural heritage features.
