Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Green Lanes Property Unit Trust ('the Client') to carry out archaeological monitoring and recording during groundworks at 22-23 Joy Street, Barnstaple, Devon, centred on National Grid Reference (NGR) 255826 133350 (Fig. 1). The archaeological work undertaken as a condition of redevelopment planning permission (planning reference 55991) being granted by North Devon Council. The monitoring and recording was the final stage in a programme of archaeological works relating to the site, preceded by a heritage statement of the larger development area (Wessex Archaeology 2013a) and an archaeological evaluation of the site comprising three trial trenches (Wessex Archaeology 2013b). Evidence for medieval activity comprised pottery, dated to the 13th-15th century from a small number of features, mostly in the southern half of the site. These included a small ditch running parallel to Joy Street just inside the street frontage, a post-hole on the same line, and a small number of pits and other features further back from the street. These contained varying quantities of domestic waste, mainly pottery and animal bone. Post-medieval features, principally pits of varying size and form were located in the northern half of the site. Although three pits lay in the southern half in the area known to have been occupied by buildings fronting Joy Street by 1830. As well as domestic waste, several features also contained slag, indicating ironworking on or close to the site during the post-medieval period. Ironworking is also documented on the site in the 19th century.
