Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Savills, on behalf of Bellway Homes, to undertake an archaeological evaluation of a 5 ha parcel of land centred on NGR 414790 128140. The evaluation was undertaken to inform the planning decision concerning the development of the site consisting the erection of 108 dwellings with associated garages and cycle/refuse storage (Planning ref. 20/00337/FUL). A total of 25 trenches were excavated with 11 containing archaeological features. Archaeological features were concentrated within the north-west, centre and south-east of the site. Within the north-west of the site undated discrete features (typically pits and postholes) and field boundaries were recorded with a possible Iron Age land division traversing the centre of the site. A likely Bronze Age round barrow and three graves, one of known Anglo-Saxon date, were recorded within trenches 17 and 18, in the south-east of the site. The barrow represents one of many within the wider landscape, with a further example located to the east, uncovered during excavations in 2011-12. Initial investigations of the graves confirmed the presence of human bone before they were covered, and trenches backfilled. A 6th century spearhead was located near the skull within the western end of the grave located in trench 18. Neither the grave or spearhead were excavated. It is likely that many of the features located during the evaluation, which confirm the results of a prior geophysical survey, are associated with the known Scheduled Settlement to the south of the site (NHLE 1005652: Woodbury Ancient Villages).
