Abstract: |
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Heritage Developments South West Limited to undertake a programme of archaeological works prior to development of land between Old Rydon Lane and Newcourt House, and to the west of Newcourt Drive, Exeter, centred on NGR 295785 090280. The archaeological mitigation was required as part of the planning permission issued to the Client by Exeter City Council (Planning Reference 12/2530/03) for a residential development comprising the construction of 46 new dwellings and highway access. A geophysical survey and trial trench evaluation were completed on the western part of the site, and have been reported on separately. To the east a narrow parcel of land, measuring approximately 0.21ha, was adjacent to an area of proven archaeological potential, and it was therefore agreed that a single phase of strip, map and record investigation would be undertaken. The machine excavation identified a line of nine circular pits of uncertain character, extent, function and date. Eight of the pits appear to lie on an arc with a projected diameter of between 62m and 68m, possibly forming a circular post ring monument, with the ninth, at the south, being a potential outlier. |
