Abstract: |
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by CgMs Consulting, to undertake a trial trench evaluation on land to the north of Keymer Avenue, Peacehaven, East Sussex, centred on National Grid Reference (NGR) 541634 101265. The fieldwork was undertaken between 27th to 31st January 2014. The archaeological trial trenching consisted of the excavation of 12 trial trenches, each measuring 30m by 1.8m. The evaluation identified a flint scatter of early prehistoric date in the north-eastern corner of the site. Initial examination of the material does not suggest an undisturbed and well-stratified deposit A limited amount of evidence for Late Bronze Age/Early Iron Age activity was recorded, including a spread of material on the eastern side of the site, whilst an undated shallow ditch possibly relates to a droveway recorded during previous investigations to the immediate east and south of the site. Further mitigation (Phase 2 investigation) is suggested on the site, particularly in reference to the early prehistoric flint scatter. |
