Abstract: |
Wessex Archaeology were commissioned by CgMs Consulting to carry out a programme of evaluation trenching on land off Old Holly lane, Atherstone in advance of a proposed residential development. The proposed development was situated to the west of known Anglo Saxon features, identified during excavations in 2013. Following the production of a Desk-Based Assessment, geophysical survey and discussions between Cathy Patrick (CgMs) and Anna Stocks (Warwickshire County Council) it was agreed that a programme of archaeological evaluation would be required to inform an outline planning application. Two trenches of 20m in length and four trenches of 30m were excavated across the site. The trenching showed evidence of post-medieval agriculture represented by furrows, along with a large field boundary running north to south south which contained post-medieval ceramic building material. |
