Abstract:
Wessex Archaeology was commissioned by Enviros Consulting Ltd to conduct a detailed geophysical investigation of three hectares (ha) of land along the northern and southern edges of the present runway at Upavon Airfield, within the Defence Training Estate of Salisbury Plain, based at Upavon, Wiltshire. The survey aimed to establish the presence/absence, extent, character and date of archaeological remains in view of modifications to the present runway design. Wessex Archaeology had previously conducted archaeological works on the site which suggested that this site had been continuously occupied from the Neolithic - Bronze Age to Late Roman period. WA conducted a detailed gradiometer survey covering 2.75ha of land at this site using a Bartington Grad601-2 dual sensor gradiometer system over grids 20m x 20m. The results of this survey revealed mainly modern debris. A series of incoherent trends were also identified (4000 and 4001) but no definite interpretation could be proposed but their orientation was similar to features found during previous phases of archaeological works.
