Abstract:
MOLA Northampton carried out a trial trench evaluation at Reading Road, Cholsey, Oxfordshire in February 2016. The earliest activity was the presence of four Neolithic pits that were noted for the recovery of a quantity of Neolithic pottery, worked flint and flint debitage. The main impact across the site appears to be the establishment of two phases of ditched enclosure The earliest phase relates to four possible late Iron Age/Early Roman ditched enclosures. One circular enclosure that probably overlaps the site had a probable Iron Age or possibly earlier date. The later phase of land enclosure of the landscape relates to the siting of a Roman farm/villa centred on an area to the south-west of the site. The majority of the Roman pottery recovered from the site and from the evaluation over the villa buildings dates from 2nd or 3rd centuries AD through to at least the late 4th century. The main structure of the villa lay on a north-west to south east alignment with its north-east façade facing across the site, from which a series of similarly- aligned rectangular ditched enclosures were established. A possible ditched track led from the villa to the north-east following an enclosure boundary.
