Abstract: |
University of Leicester Archaeological Services (ULAS) carried out an archaeological evaluation by trial trenching on land off the A508, Pitsford Reservoir, Brixworth, Northamptonshire. The work was undertaken as part of an archaeological impact assessment in advance of a proposed residential development. The evaluation targeted known geophysical anomalies and revealed archaeological deposits consisting of ditches, gullies, postholes representing a series of enclosure systems, property/land boundaries, possibly structures; evidence for intensive local occupation and dating from the mid Iron Age through to the 2nd century AD. The Iron Age activity was focused around three enclosures and a trackway on a north-west - south-east alignment in the centre of the site. To the north and south two discrete areas of complex Roman archaeology was identified dating predominantly to the late 1st - 2nd century AD. The site archive will be held by ULAS, accession no.
