Abstract: |
University of Leicester Archaeological Services (ULAS) carried out an archaeological evaluation for land off Benefield Road, Glapthorn, Northamptonshire, PE85BQ (NGR: TL01893 90479), on behalf Mr Andrew Pick. 4 trenches were excavated to evaluate an area in advance of a proposed residential development. The archaeological work was carried out from the 27th November -30th November 2018, in accordance with the National Planning Policy Framework, Section 12: Conserving and Enhancing the Historic Environment. The trenches revealed evidence of large probably rectangular pits and linear features which produced pottery of mainly early to mid medieval date, as well as a large quantity of iron working slag. Most of the features were in the half of the field closest to the road. The evidence suggests some form of industrial activity on or near the site which is earlier and appears unrelated to the late medieval/early modern period pottery industry in the village. |
