Abstract: |
Fieldwalking of the whole field at rough scrape stage, in transects 10 metres apart with positions of finds recorded by GPS. Followed by metal detector sweep of the areas with the highest density of pottery. Cropmarks identified in the National Archaeological Identification Survey (NIAS) for South-West Cambridgeshire (RaMIS 6948) as potentially Iron Age or Roman were confirmed as Roman from a concentration of Roman pottery sherds and metal finds, including coins, over the largest area of crop marks. Neither pottery nor coins were of high status. No medieval pottery was found; medieval metal work comprised one lead weight or gaming piece and a harness piece.
Metal work has been registered with Cambridgeshire PAS. Other metal finds, not part of this project, have been registered with Leicestershire PAS. |
